Sun Stones Garden Art conjures images of dreamy sun-drenched scenes, succulents and white sands.
Sun Stones art is about that and more. Partners Ricky Munguia and Juan Diaz use nature’s elements in their pieces — stones that are true, wood that is recycled, glass that had a life before it found its way into a rain chain or other object.
Sculpture Ricky Munguia, owner of Sun Stones Home and Garden, poses with one of his creations, an oversized metal spider for the garden.

Munguia has been using mixed media and deconstructed metals since high school. Like lots of artists, Munguia said, “I’ve been an artist since I could hold a pencil.”
Lately, he’s given up graphic art as a way to make his living and focuses exclusively on his own three-dimensional imagination.
Munguia and Diaz work long days, on one-of-a-kind rain chains and mobiles, as well as handcrafted birdhouses. Another popular line is the one of spiders crafted from used industrial light bulbs and metal parts.
Retail accounts keep rolling in, and the pair hustle to keep up with orders. Impressive considering that they sold their first rain chain just two years ago.
Their design studio sits in the back yard of their tiny house on a quiet, tree-lined street in Orange. Diaz built the studio’s interior and much of their furniture from reclaimed wood. They haven’t launched a line of wood furniture, yet. So far they are too busy.
The two typically hit the road in spring and sell at garden shows across the west. In June, it’s time to settle down, fill retail orders and work with new ideas.
“I’m always learning how to work smarter and new ways to do things,” Munguia said.
More than anything, though, Munguia loves to connect with people and see them marvel at his art.
The two are venturing into home design, working out ideas for chandeliers. A water feature might be in their future also, although they haven’t worked out the kinks in their ideas yet.
