The ultimate back yard for sports enthusiasts

Posted by Jeff Pryor

It is not as if the landscape doesn’t work all year long, but Jeff Caldwell especially enjoys his back yard during football season.

With five big-screen TVs, a full kitchen and deep-seated furniture, Caldwell’s Newport Beach yard is often the best party in town.

“I’m pretty sure we spend more time in our landscape than we do in our home,” Caldwell said.

The previous outdoor kitchen was all concrete and cobwebs when Dana and Jeff Caldwell purchased the property six years ago.

That’s all gone. In went interior grade cabinets with self-closing hardware, Viking stove, microwave, dishwasher, wine cooler, humidor, 2 Kegerators and a soda gun.

“We use the soda gun more than anything,” Caldwell said. “The kids come up with endless concoctions.”

Caldwell purchased the house built in 2004 primarily for the back yard.

“We asked our realtor to show us properties with amazing landscapes. She showed us the one depicted on the Cheesecake Factory menu. I had been admiring that landscape for two years, and it turns out it was the house we bought,” he said.

Caldwell decided to take it up a notch. The couple called on the original landscape team at Southwinds Landscaping, and interior designers at Showplace South in Costa Mesa, plus the crew at Murray Home Theater to incorporate enough style and comfort, and TVs, to make football season a blast.

“Super Bowl is lots of fun. But more fun is a regular football day when I can watch five different games on five televisions,” he said.

Underwater speakers in the pool mean you won’t miss a play. But the highlight of the yard is the urinal wall in the bathroom. Doubling as a water feature, and with a TV installed at eye level, the men at Caldwell’s parties have the ultimate guy experience.

The college football BCS championship is coming up. And the Caldwells will pack up to 100 people in their yard for the Super Bowl. But the landscape is designed to accommodate a crowd. Every low wall is seat; there are plenty of pillows and chairs, there is a fireplace, and 19 TVs will be on throughout the property.

Could a football lover be happier?
